What new Shopify stores are missing: October 2026 report
We audited 2,504 newly launched US Shopify stores on their live sites. Most open without the basic tools that turn a first visit into a sale.
Last updated: Oct 9, 2026
Key findings
- About 1,049 newly registered domains a day point to Shopify, roughly 31,000 a month (23,081 of 730,442 domains registered 2026-09-13 to 2026-10-04, 3.2%).
- 91.9% of new US stores have no email or SMS capture tool, the most common gap we found.
- 88.5% have no Google Analytics or Google Ads tag, and 84.2% have no Meta pixel, so most cannot measure or retarget ad traffic.
- 84.9% have no product reviews app.
- The average new store has 5.77 of the 8 gaps we check. Only 10.1% have a homepage slower than 3 seconds, so speed is rarely the problem.
- 44.2% publish a business email on their own site. The median store lists 30 products.
From domain registration to open store
| Step | Count | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Newly registered domains scanned | 730,442 | 100% |
| Domains pointing to Shopify | 23,081 | 3.2% |
| Open US stores with at least 3 products, audited so far | 2,504 | – |
Many domains point to Shopify days or weeks before the store opens, and our audit queue is still working through the most recent registrations, so the last row grows every day.

Which niches are launching
| Niche | New US stores | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Apparel | 702 | 28% |
| Home & Garden | 354 | 14.1% |
| Jewelry & Accessories | 300 | 12% |

Where they are
| State (store address) | New stores |
|---|---|
| California | 326 |
| Florida | 295 |
| Wyoming | 196 |
| Texas | 195 |
| New York | 106 |
| Georgia | 89 |
State is the address set in Shopify. Registered-agent and virtual-office addresses make states such as Wyoming and Delaware look larger than where owners live.
Themes they launch with
| Theme | Stores | Share of stores with a detected theme |
|---|---|---|
| Horizon | 1,058 | 59.9% |
| Dawn | 369 | 20.9% |
| Shrine PRO | 192 | 10.9% |
| My Store | 120 | 6.8% |
| Tinker | 28 | 1.6% |
64.1% run one of Shopify's free themes. That is a sensible way to start, but it also means many new stores look alike.
What this means
For store owners: the cheapest fixes come first. An email signup form, a reviews app and the Google and Meta tags take an afternoon, and most of your new competitors have not done them yet. Check your store for free to see which ones you are missing.
For agencies and app makers: a store's missing tools are a concrete, verifiable reason to reach out. A note that says "your store has no email capture yet" is more useful to the owner than a generic pitch.
Method and limits
We take the free daily list of newly registered domains, keep those whose DNS points to Shopify (23.227.38.0/24), and read each store's public /meta.json and live homepage. A store counts as US when its Shopify store country is the United States, and as open when it is not password-protected and lists at least 3 products. Gaps are detected from known app and tag signatures in the public homepage, so a tool loaded in an unusual way can be missed. Audits ran 2026-09-27 to 2026-10-09. Full method: how it works.
