How to cold email new Shopify stores

Last updated: 30 Sep 2026

Write to the business contact the store publishes, mention one specific thing you noticed on their store, offer something small and useful, and include an easy opt-out. Keep it under 100 words and send one at a time from your own inbox.

1. Start with one specific, checkable gap

"I noticed there's no email popup on your new site" beats "We help brands grow". The owner can check it in seconds, so it earns attention. See the 8-point checklist.

2. A real example

This is a suggested opener from one of our files (store name masked):

Subject: Quick idea for ALLO•••

Hi ALLO••• team, I came across ALLO•••'s new site this week. I noticed there's no email popup or welcome-email tool set up yet. For new stores, a simple welcome-offer popup is usually the cheapest way to turn first-time visitors into repeat buyers. Happy to share a quick example of how that could look for ALLO••• — would that be useful?

Not relevant? Just reply "no" and I won't follow up.

3. Keep it short and personal

  • Under 100 words, one idea, one question.
  • Send from your own inbox, one message at a time, not a bulk blast.
  • One follow-up after a few days is enough.

4. CAN-SPAM basics (not legal advice)

For commercial email in the US, the FTC's CAN-SPAM rules include: don't use false or misleading header information or subject lines, identify yourself, include a valid postal address, tell recipients how to opt out and honour opt-outs promptly. Check the rules that apply to you, especially if you or the recipient are outside the US.

5. Use only published business contacts

Write to the address the store publishes on its own site (info@, support@ or the contact page), not to personal addresses found elsewhere. That's the only kind of contact we include in our files.
